The aim of the Sailing School is to introduce new adult sailors to the fundamentals of sailing; to help them learn to sail safely and especially to have fun.
The club uses the Canadian Yachting Association's CANSail dinghy program to bring students to the CANSail 2 competency.
Successful graduates will be offered a trial membership in the club which enables them to continue using the sailing school dinghies to enhance their skills.
Our courses are geared to adults, but if you have a teenage family member (15 yrs. or older) who wishes to take the course with you, contact the Sailing School Director.
The fact that some of our students are experienced seniors proves that it's never too late to learn, especially when it comes to sailing. You will almost certainly make new friends and sailing buddies.

or

INSTRUCTORS
A CYA Certified Instructor leads each class. You will learn to sail up to the level of CANSail 2, giving you competency to sail in winds up to 10 knots.
We have an in-house classroom and a number of CL-14 sailboats that you will use, right from your first day.
CLOTHING
You should come on the first day with an approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD), usually referred to as a lifejacket. Canadian Tire carries a number that are CCG (Canadian Coast Guard) approved. We will advise you what to buy if you are not sure.
To make sure your PFD fits you properly, pull up on the vest from the top of the shoulders as if you are being pulled out of the water. The vest should not slip over your head!
Clothing should include shorts or pants that are wind and water repellent, a hat and a windbreaker or a waterproof jacket.
If you have one, a wetsuit is a good idea, and footwear that will not kick off in the water and that have non-marking soles. The best are neoprene water shoes.
Dress according to the weather - you can always take layers off if you are too warm but you'll be surprised at how much cooler it is on the water than on land, especially early in the season.
Also bring a change of clothing for after sailing in case you get wet.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (F.A.Q.)
WHAT WILL I LEARN IN THE CANSAIL PROGRAM?
The course will provide all required on-land and on-water instruction and practice necessary to enable you to rig, launch, sail, and land a dinghy. You will also learn about safety, seamanship, sailing terminology and how to right an overturned sailboat.
WHAT IF I HAVE NO PRIOR SAILING EXPERIENCE?
We offer the CANSail program for adults of any age interested in learning how to sail and how to confidently handle a sailboat. No prior sailing experience is required, just the desire to learn and to have fun!
IN WHAT KIND OF BOAT WILL I LEARN TO SAIL?
The club owns a number of CL14 sailboats. These boats are 14 feet in length and are easy to rig. They are stable boats, normally sailed by two people; the skipper steers the boat and operates the main sail, and the crew operates the jib (front sail), provides balance, and acts as a lookout for the skipper. Students will learn and practice being both skipper and crew.
WILL I RECEIVE A CERTIFICATE UPON COMPLETION OF THE COURSE?
Successful completion of the program will earn you a CANSail 2 (previous White Sail III) certificate, indicating a level of sailing skill to competently rig, launch, sail and land a small dinghy, without supervision, in wind speeds of approximately 10 knots/hour. Partial completion of the program will earn a certificate of CANSail 1 (Previously White Sail Level 1 or 2). CANSail 1 is a very basic level, primarily covering rigging, terminology, safety, launching a sailboat and other introductory information. CANSail 2 provides an increased level of sailing skill to competently rig, launch, sail and land a dinghy under instructor supervision.
HOW MUCH TIME IS SPENT ON THE WATER?
Approximately one-quarter of the lesson time is spent in class, and three-quarters of the time is spent on the water (weather permitting).
HOW WILL I BE TESTED?
There will be written tests and practical on-water tests for each level as you progress through the program. You will also be required to right a capsized (overturned) boat in the water. (Don't worry, the instructor and helpers will be nearby and you will have practiced the method beforehand!)
HOW LONG IS THE COURSE?
The course consists of Saturday or Sunday classes of 7 hours each including one half hour for lunch. It is very important to attend all 6 sessions - if you cannot, speak to the instructor who can tell you what you will miss
CAN I TAKE A TEST RIDE TO SEE IF I LIKE IT?
Yes you can! Come and visit us on one of our 'Open House' days. We have two of these each year, the first in May and the second in June. The dates are displayed on the Welcome page of this website.
On Open House days visitors are able, weather permitting, to go out with an experienced sailor in the actual boats used for training. We also have some keel-boats taking visitors out, so feel free to bring your camera (preferably waterproof) to capture the excitement of your first sail and the spectacular views of the Scarborough Bluffs. Hopefully you will take away some pleasant memories, and the incentive to begin learning new skills which will provide you with years of enjoyment!
CAN I CONTINUE TO USE THE CLUB BOATS AFTER I EARN MY CERTIFICATE?
Upon successful completion of the course, graduates will be offered, for a nominal fee, a trial membership in the club. This will allow them the use of the sailing school dinghies when available. The trial membership also allows for the use of the club facilities for the remainder of the membership year.
If you have any other questions about our courses, please get in touch with the Sailing School Director (school@sailingclub.on.ca)
Successful graduates of the Sailing School
Successful graduates of the Sailing School are offered a TRIAL MEMBERSHIP in the club for only $113.00 including HST. This allows them the use of the club dinghies and facilities for the balance of the membership year (April of the following year). This is a "non-voting" membership, but will allow them to practice their newly acquired skills and familiarize themselves with the club. It is our hope they will remain as full members the following year.
