Sailing School
sailing school

The aim of the Sailing School is to introduce newcomers to the skill of sailing; to help them learn to sail safely and especially to have fun.

The club uses the Canadian Yachting Association 'White Sail' standard to bring students to the 'White Sail Level 3' competency.

Successful graduates may be offered a trial membership in the club which will enable them to continue using the club boats to enhance their skills.

Our courses are geared to adults, but if you have a teenage family member who wishes to take the course with you, contact the Sailing School Director.

The fact that we have trained seniors on some of our courses proves that it's never too late to learn, especially when it comes to sailing. You will almost certainly make new friends and sailing buddies.

COURSE SCHEDULE

The White Sail Level course consists of 6 Saturdays or 6 Sundays. Each class is 6 hours including a half hour break for lunch. All classes begin at 10 am until 4 pm.

There will no classes held on the Canada Day or Civic Holiday weekends.

The first sessions will be held from May 29th until July 11th

The second sessions will be held from July 17th until August 29th

INSTRUCTORS

A CYA Certified Instructor leads each class. You will learn to sail up to the level of White Sail 3, giving you competency to sail in winds up to 10 knots.

We have an in-house classroom and a number of CL-14 sailboats that you will use, right from your first day.

CLOTHING

You should come on the first day with an approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD), usually referred to as a lifejacket. Canadian Tire carries a number that are CCG (Canadian Coast Guard) approved. We will advise you what to buy if you are not sure.

To make sure your PFD fits you properly, pull up on the vest from the top of the shoulders as if you are being pulled out of the water. The vest should not slip over your head!

Clothing should include a bathing suit, shorts or pants that are wind and water repellent. A windbreaker or a waterproof jacket of some kind is also a good idea.

If you have one, a wetsuit is even better, and some type of footwear that you don't mind getting wet. The best are neoprene water shoes.
You will then be able to make a decision as to what to wear before you go out on the water. Depending on the weather, you can always take layers off if you are too warm.

Also bring a change of clothing for after sailing (you may get a bit wet).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (F.A.Q.)

WHAT WILL I LEARN IN THE WHITE SAIL PROGRAM?
The course will provide all required on-land and on-water instruction and practice necessary to enable you to rig, launch, sail, and land a dinghy. You will also learn about safety, seamanship, sailing terminology and how to right an overturned sailboat.

WHAT IF I HAVE NO PRIOR SAILING EXPERIENCE?
We offer the White Sail program for adults of any age interested in learning how to sail and confidently handle a sailboat. No prior sailing experience is required, just the desire to learn and have fun!

IN WHAT KIND OF BOAT WILL I LEARN TO SAIL?
The club owns a number of CL14 sailboats. These boats are 14 feet in length and are easy to rig. They are stable boats, normally sailed by two people: the skipper steers the boat and operates the main sail, and the crew operates the jib (front sail), provides balance, and acts as a lookout for the skipper. Students will learn and practice being both skipper and crew.

WILL I RECEIVE A CERTIFICATE UPON COMPLETION OF THE COURSE?
Successful completion of the program will earn you a White Sail Level 3 certificate, indicating a level of sailing skill to competently rig, launch, sail and land a small dinghy, without supervision, in wind speeds of approximately 10 knots/hour. Partial completion of the program will earn a certificate of White Sail Level 1 or 2. White Sail I is a very basic level, primarily covering rigging, terminology, safety, launching a sailboat and other introductory information. White Sail 2 indicates a level of sailing skill to rig, launch, sail and land a dinghy under instructor supervision.

HOW MUCH TIME IS SPENT ON THE WATER?
Approximately one-third of the lessons are spent in class, and two-thirds are spent on the water (weather permitting).

HOW WILL I BE TESTED?
There will be written tests and practical on-water tests for each White Sail level 1, 2 and 3 as you progress through the program. You will also be required to right a capsized (overturned) boat in the water. (Don't worry, the instructor and helpers will be nearby and you will have practiced it!)

HOW LONG IS THE COURSE?
The WSII course consists of Saturday or Sunday classes of 6 hours each including one half hour for lunch. This covers all three levels of White Sail certification

CAN I TAKE A TEST RIDE TO SEE IF I LIKE IT?
Yes you can! Come and visit us on one of our 'open house' days. We have two of these each year, the first being in May and the second in June. They are displayed on the Welcome page of this website until the dates are past.
On those days visitors are able, weather permitting, to go out with an experienced sailor in the actual boats used for training. We also have some keel-boats, so feel free to bring your camera (preferably waterproof) to capture the excitement of your first sail and the spectacular views of the Scarborough Bluffs. Hopefully you will take away some pleasant memories, and the incentive to begin learning new skills which will provide you with years of enjoyment!

CAN I CONTINUE TO USE THE CLUB BOATS AFTER I EARN MY WHITE SAIL III CERTIFICATE?
Upon successful completion of the White Sail III course, graduates will be offered, for a nominal fee, a trial membership in the club. This will allow them the use of club boats when available. This trial membership will also allow them the use of the club facilities for the remainder of the membership year.
